75th Jubilee Excursion and New Engine Fundraiser

Southern California Live Steamers started in 1941 when meetings were held in members’ homes and once a month a run day was held at founding member Dick Jackson’s Beverly Hills backyard. In 1948 Walt Disney, Ollie Johnston, Martin and Irene Lewis of Little Engines Company joined the club. In 1949 the club started a larger club track in Lomita. There were 2 parallel loops of track each 700 feet long which circled around the little engines manufacturing facility, which was directly behind the Lewis residence.

Fast forward 46 years later in 1987. For the Torrance 75th anniversary event, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration on October 24, 1987, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11, 1990, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! In 2015, the City and SCLS renewed its partnership with another 25-year License Agreement thru 2040. Known as the “hidden gem” of the City of Torrance, SCLS has grown leaps and bounds since moving to Wilson Park. From the plot of dirt, beautiful trees have grown, the City erected a Station so that the public have a shaded area as they wait to board the trains, a beautiful clock tower chimes hourly, community partnerships with the Scouts boast a flagpole among its projects that proudly displays and honors our American Flag, a Depot was built with the help of donors and students from the Long Beach Community College, and over 7,000 feet of railroad was laid so that the public can enjoy free mini train rides twice a month on the 1st Sundays and 3rd Saturdays. SCLS is a non-profit all-volunteer organization that continues to grow with generous donations.

On June 10, 2017, SCLS members will board the Silver Splendor for a private scenic train excursion along the Southern California Coast leaving Los Angeles Union Station (LAX) for San Luis Obispo (SLO). The Silver Splendor is a stylishly appointed Vista Dome-Lounge-Dining Car built in 1956. The graceful glass-enclosed rooftop observation room provides unparalleled views in all directions. The lower dining area can hold up to 24 passengers in comfort with an additional lounge area below the observation dome for face-to-face time with friends. Breakfast with coffee, tea, and mimosa will be provided upon departure at about 7:50 a.m. Passengers have the option to get off at Santa Barbara (SBA) and not continue on to SLO at about 10:30 a.m. for some wine tasting, exploration, or to visit the Mission (SBA stop is at your own expense). Buffet lunch and drinks will be provided to passengers who choose to remain aboard between SBA and SLO. Arrive to SLO at about 1:15 p.m. for a quick stop as the engineer changes ends to reverse southbound for the return trip to LAX. During the 45-minute “lay-over” passengers may walk to the SLO Railroad Museum or to nearby shops. Depart SLO at 2:00 p.m. and pick-up passengers from SBA at 4:30 p.m. Dinner, wine and champagne/sparkling cider toast will be served between SBA and LAX. Arrive to LAX at about 7:20 p.m. Limited number of guests may join SCLS members on this excursion at a non-refundable cost of $300 per person or $200 for children 10 to 12 years of age (sorry, no children younger than 10). For additional information, contact President@SouthernCaliforniaLiveSteamers.org.

NOTE: Silver Splendor will be attached to Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner #1761 on the northbound trip and #1790 on the southbound trip. Actual times may vary depending on railroad operational conditions. Check Amtrak’s website for actual travel times. Passengers are responsible for your own transportation back to LAX should you miss the train at SBA or SLO.
